What is Smartline?

Smartline is a ground breaking research project looking at how technology can help us live healthier and happier lives. We are a partnership project led by the University of Exeter with Coastline Housing Ltd, Cornwall Council and Volunteer Cornwall. We are funded by the European Union Regional Development Fund and the South West Academic Health Science Network.

We are working with approximately 300 Coastline Housing customers in the Camborne, Pool, Illogan and Redruth (CPIR) area of Cornwall to look at the relationship between technology and how people live in their homes and communities.

Our work involves community-building activities and business support to develop innovative products and services in the e-health and wellbeing market.

Our work is informed by data collected from sensors measuring air quality, humidity, temperature, water and energy use plus in-depth surveys to help us understand people’s wellbeing needs, aspirations and desires for their community.

This collaborative work between researchers, communities and businesses is giving us new insight into how people use technology and how technology could be used in the future to support happy, healthy lives.

The partners and businesses in the project can use these insights to develop better systems and ways of supporting people plus new products and services that will better meet people’s needs.

Smartline has been funded in Cornwall by the European Union Regional Development Fund in order to help local businesses develop new technologies and increase job opportunities in the county.

The South West Academic Health Science Network (SW AHSN) has provided additional funding to Smartline. The SW AHSN is dedicated to improving health and care. It is part of a national network of 15 AHSNs, set up and part-funded by NHS England to identify, adopt and spread innovation across the region.
