Being a participant

Digitally connecting your community to help you take back control of your health and wellbeing

Smartline has recruited 300 Coastline Housing customers within the Camborne, Pool, Illogan and Redruth area to participate in the project.

One aspect of the project involved fitting environmental sensors into the homes of our participants. These sensors are installed and are capturing data on air quality, humidity, temperature, how much water is used, how air moves around different types of houses and how much energy it takes to heat them. The sensors will stay in place for two years to capture seasonal variances and provide a sizable data set for researchers to learn from.

Our participants are able to see their own live sensor data through a tablet computer that was supplied to them as part of project. The live data stream allows households to see the impact of opening windows on their air quality and the impact on their energy usage and internal temperature by turning heating on/off.

Academics within the University of Exeter will also engage with our participants through their tablets. Monthly surveys will be sent electronically to the tablets to ask households about their health and well-being. In addition there will opportunities for participants to take part in mini-projects with the University of Exeter or local businesses.

Supporting the local community

We are also working with participants and local community groups to support a number of local projects, these are just a few:

  • Working with communities to develop green spaces in order to improve health and well-being and social interaction to build the community.
  • Setup coffee mornings in order to bring community members together in order to support the issue of social isolation.
  • Supporting IT education by holding focused workshops in key areas to support the development of skills and IT literacy.
